The threat and impact of sanctions pose a particular risk in the Middle East and Africa, which occupies key geographical locations; numerous sea routes, ports and major sensitive industries. Sanctions is high on the news agenda, with the geopolitical situation constantly bringing new developments. Financial institutions and corporates operating in this region navigating the compliance complexity, which can change almost daily, requires dedicated monitoring, risk-assessment and foresight. The panel will discuss the implications of the growth of human rights and corruption sanctions, political developments which underpin the Iranian and Syrian sanctions regimes, understanding the regional exposure to proliferation finance risk, and managing secondary sanctions exposure across key industries within the Middle East and Africa.
